Advanced Machine Learning

There are many links to the field of data science for even broader opportunities. As AI spreads into wider sectors, you’ll find opportunities in areas such as medicine, transport, economics and more. There is also the opportunity to pursue academic research via MPhil or PhD positions. The module is themed around the notion of data as a resource; how it is acquired, prepared for analysis and finally how we can learn from it. The module will employ a practical Python-based approach to try and help students develop an intuitive grasp of the sophisticated mathematical ideas that underpin this challenging but fascinating subject. This module provides an introduction to Artificial Intelligence, and to key concepts and problems in the field, such as whether a computer is capable of understanding, and whether humans should themselves be viewed as machines.

You will learn how to use Apache Spark to process large-scale data and apply data analysis, data visualisation and machine learning techniques. Drawing on research in machine learning and deep learning, our course provides you with a systematic understanding of AI techniques that will enable you to develop and apply AI solutions in a range of settings. Along with developing technical skills, you will also develop research and professional skills, so you can be ready to meet the needs of employers in this exciting and rapidly evolving field. Our Real Time Systems Lab is the main research and development facility for the Real Time Systems research group. Inside the laboratory is a range of high-performance computers, custom hardware like FPGAs, robots, and various industrial machinery.
